A Load Moment Indicator (LMI) is a crucial safety device used in cranes to prevent overloading and potential tipping during lifting operations. It continuously monitors the crane's lifting parameters and alerts the operator when the load approaches or exceeds the crane’s rated capacity. This system enhances operational safety and efficiency by providing real-time data on the load weight, boom angle, boom length, and working radius. The LMI works by comparing the actual lifting conditions with the crane’s load chart, which is programmed into the system. If the crane is nearing its maximum capacity based on the boom position and load radius, the LMI will trigger visual and audible alarms. In some systems, it can even limit or cut off crane functions to prevent hazardous maneuvers.
