In post frame buildings, the posts are either embedded directly into the ground or are attached directly to the top of precast embedded concrete piers. Any portions of posts embedded directly into the ground are pressure treated with preservatives to ensure durability.

Compared to traditional framing methods, post frame construction is considerably less expensive. Because there are fewer materials, costs are kept under control in all phases, including roofing materials – metal sheeting instead of asphalt shingles can be used.

In post frame construction, posts get all the glory, while the humble girt is overlooked. Girts are horizontal braces that distribute loads laterally and tie vertical columns and posts into an interlocked frame to make the structure stronger, sturdier, and more stable.

The post frame Wheat Barn at Cressing Temple was built sometime between 1257 and 1280. Structural posts were put directly in the ground to sit on buried stone footings, while the technique known as secret notched-lap joinery was used to connect posts and braces.
